First Communion is held as one of the holiest and most important occasions in a Roman Catholic's life. It indicates that this soul has received the Sacrament of the Eucharist. This is the body and blood of Jesus Christ. Most Catholic children receive their First Communion when they are a mere seven or eight years of age. The reason for this is that it is considered the age of reason. For all those parents who have children preparing for First Communion, we know boys and girls have similar expectations. Because of this, the young Catholic children will make their first confession. This will be traditionally be done a week before receiving their First Communion. At confession, the child will report sins and any misbehavior to a priest. In exchange they will receive a penance. The penance is usually several prayers to be recited directly after they exit the confessional. Once the child is cleared of sin, they are ready to make her First Communion. Confession isn't the only requirement for receiving the Sacrament of Holy Eucharist. The Sacrament of Baptism is also required to be received as well. A child, or any person in fact, who is not baptized cannot receive communion. If the child is baptized, she generally begins studying for First Communion in first grade. Those children who don't attend Catholic school go to religious classes after school or often on the weekends. In most cases, this will last at least two years. There's more to a child's first communion than a pretty white dress and a family party. While it is a cause for celebration, it is not the focus. The event indicates that the children have studied and understood, to the best of their abilities, the mystery of transubstantiation. Such a big word for a child. They comprehend the miracle of changing ordinary bread and wine into the essence of Christ's body and blood. First Communion is a very important and holy day for Catholic children because they are receiving, for the first time, the body and blood of Jesus Christ. Choosing the proper invitation is key.
